Living National Treasure Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI and Nishikawa Koryu V USA Tour Fall 2007

From September 29 to October 21, 2007, Shinnai narrative song master Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI and master puppetry artist Nishikawa Koryu V of the Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo troupe will present workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and formal performances for audiences in Amherst, MA, Hanford, CA, and St. Louis, MO.

The troupe of five, including narrative singer Tsuruga Wakasanojo , two shamisen players, and two puppetry artists, are continuing in a twenty-year collaborative relationship between the Shinnai genre and Kuruma Ningyo puppetry. This collaboration has marked an innovative departure from the traditional roots of Shinnai as a narrative form that was originally performed independently of any other performing art, unlike other traditional narrative styles, such as gidayu and tokiwazu, that have been associated with the Kabuki and Bunraku theaters since their beginnings.

Tsuruga Wakasanojo XI and Nishikawa Koryu V have traveled extensively both in Japan and internationally and have performed in the United States on previous occasions, both together and independently. Their active performance schedule attests to their professional commitment to encouraging understanding, appreciation, and, above all, enjoyment of these fascinating traditional Japanese performing art forms.

Please see the tour schedule for program details at each venue.
